Trump, Starmer, and Britain’s Silent Shame

If there’s one political figure who manages to unite Britain in near-universal disdain, it’s Donald Trump.

The latest UK polling paints the picture clearly: only 16% of Britons hold a favourable view of the former US President. A staggering 70% disapprove. These are among the worst numbers any American leader has ever faced on this side of the Atlantic.

Frankly, it’s easy to see why.

As Britain watches its closest ally unravel the rule of law, undermine democracy, and flirt with authoritarianism, Trump’s name has become synonymous with division and decay. His brand of politics is coarse, chaotic, and corrosive. And to most of us in the UK, it reeks.

So when Keir Starmer was spotted shaking hands and smiling politely at Turnberry last weekend, the discomfort was hard to ignore.

As The Times aptly put it, Starmer looked like a “foreign dignitary in his own country” – submissive, silenced, and overshadowed.

Trump used the occasion to insult London Mayor Sadiq Khan, heap praise on Nigel Farage, and drone on with unhinged tirades about immigration and energy policy. Starmer’s reaction? A few nods. A careful smile. Not one word of challenge.

Yes, pragmatism matters in diplomacy. So do the defence and intelligence ties that bind the UK and US. But does pragmatism mean silence in the face of injustice?

Leaders like Canada’s Mark Carney have shown there’s a better way. Carney doesn’t fawn over Trump. He speaks the truth – even when it’s uncomfortable. And he earns respect for it.

This September, Britain has a chance to speak the truth, too – even if our Prime Minister won’t.

Trump’s Return, and Britain’s Response

Donald Trump is expected to return to the UK in mid-September. Thanks to public pressure, he will not be addressing Parliament. That red line held firm. But Trump will still be here – and still using his visit to showcase his dangerous political brand.

Open Britain is proud to be part of the Stop Trump Coalition, and we believe this visit should not go unanswered. Trump is the antithesis of the values Britain claims to champion – equality, democracy, and rule of law.

And when our leaders won’t speak out, the streets must.

Join Us: September 17

On Wednesday 17th September, we’ll join allies across the country in taking to the streets.

This protest is about more than one man. It’s a rejection of everything Trumpism represents – bigotry, authoritarianism, and contempt for truth.

The Open Britain bloc will be there, loud and visible. And we want you with us.

In 1776, America said no to tyranny. In 2025, it’s Britain’s turn.

Let’s make it unforgettable.
