Open Britain is backing the #PoliticsNotForSale campaign, a coalition of organisations calling for stronger rules on political donations and campaign spending.
The campaign, coordinated by Fair Vote UK and supported by organisations including the Electoral Reform Society, the Good Law Project, Transparency International UK and Spotlight on Corruption, is urging Parliament to strengthen safeguards against the growing influence of big money in British politics.
The call comes as MPs debate the Representation of the People Bill - legislation that will shape the rules governing elections and political finance.
Under current rules, there is no cap on how much an individual in the UK can donate to a political party.
In recent years have seen increasingly large donations from a small number of wealthy individuals - and when a handful of individuals can donate millions of pounds, they can gain a level of access and influence that ordinary voters simply do not have.
The #PoliticsNotForSale campaign is calling for two key reforms:
A cap on political donations.
Limits on political party spending.
Together, these changes would help ensure that political influence is earned through public support rather than financial power.
With the Representation of the People Bill currently before Parliament, there is a rare opportunity to strengthen the rules governing political finance and make Britain's democracy fairer and more accountable.
MPs are far more likely to take notice when they hear directly from their constituents. The more people who contact their MPs, the harder it becomes to ignore the case for reform.
