Put a cap on big money: sign our petition to the Lords
We have started a petition calling on the House of Lords to back a meaningful cap on political donations as peers scrutinise the Representation of the People Bill.
Very large donations risk giving a handful of wealthy people disproportionate influence over our politics. We want the Lords to help change that – will you add your name?
There is currently no limit on how much a donor can give a UK political party. September’s announcement of two £36 million donations to Reform UK laid bare the scale of money that big donors can bring into British politics.
Money pays for staff, advertising, polling and the ability to reach voters again and again. When a party can rely on a few enormous cheques, those writing them have opportunities to be heard that most voters will never get.
A bigger bank balance should not buy a bigger say.
The Representation of the People Bill gives Parliament an opportunity to act. It includes welcome measures to strengthen political finance rules, including a cap on donations from overseas electors. But it leaves donations from people living in the UK unlimited.
The risk of disproportionate influence does not disappear when a donor moves here. A meaningful cap should apply across parties, with safeguards to stop wealthy donors getting around it.
We’re using a rarely exercised right to petition the House of Lords asking them to put that principle into law.
As peers examine the Bill, we want them to hear from people who expect our democracy to work for all of us.
